According to Wikipedia, a Web Developer is one who specializes in, or is specifically engaged in, the development of World Wide Web applications using a client-side model. The applications typically use HTML, CSS and JavaScript in the client, PHP, ASP.NET (C#), Python or Java in the server, and http for communications between client and server. A web content management system is often used to develop and maintain web applications.

Web Developers build websites. They analyse user needs to ensure the proper content, graphics and underlying structure are used to meet both the goals of the user and the website’s owner.

The basic responsibilities of web developers are as follows:

a) Implementing scripting languages to build websites.

b) Writing, designing and editing webpage content or directing others producing content.

c) Identifying and fixing issues.

d) Converting written, graphic, audio and video components to compatible web formats.

e) Have an understanding of HTML and CMS.

f) Have an understanding of UI and UX.

g) Provide website maintenance and enhancements.

There will be more responsibilities and tasks but it depends on your web development specialities. There are three web development specialities you should be aware of. These are:

1) Front-end development

It refers to the client-side of the website and deals with the interaction and what you see on the website.

2) Back-end development

Back-end development refers to the server-side of the website and basically refers to the behind the scene that takes place in the development of a website.

3) Full-stack development

It refers to the combination of both front-end and back-end development.

How to become a Web Developer?

In order to become a web developer, take into account the following steps.

1) First things first, you must have a good grasp of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. HTML will make the structure, CSS make the website look pretty and JavaScript will make it work or function.

2) Next, you must be absolutely familiar with how WordPress works.

3) You must also familiarize yourself with UI (User Interface) and UX (User Experience.)

4) You can also opt for learning PHP and SQL, although it is optional.

5) Learn the basics of SEO or Search Engine Optimization.  This refers to the process of improving a website’s rankings within a search engine like Google.

6) When you’re creating your own website, you should make sure your site is responsive.

Responsive means that the elements of the website adjust according to the screen size. This means that your website will look good whether the visitor is on a laptop or mobile device.

Once you have down all of these steps, you will have a basic understanding of what web development is all about and can actually do it at the basic level.
